06The story of the land

People have come here to build something since 1849.

Forty-niners came for the springs. Rail crews made it the end of the line. Then the ranchers stayed.

  1. 1849

A town named for a machine

A horse-powered shingle mill by clear springs could turn out 16,000 shingles a day, and gave Shingle Springs its name.1 2

  2. 1849

    The Boston-Newton camp

The Boston-Newton Joint Stock Association camped here on September 26, 1849, a site now California Historical Landmark No. 456.3

  3. 1865 to 1888

    The end of the line

The railroad reached Shingle Springs in 1865, and Comstock freight moved from rail to wagon here until rails reached Placerville in 1888.2 4 5

  4. 1937

    The ranch house

The red ranch house that still stands on this property is built, with its stone fireplace at the heart of it.
